Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates New Campus of Nalanda University, Rajgir, Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, marking a significant milestone in India’s educational and cultural landscape. The revamped institution, conceptualized as a collaborative effort between India and the East Asia Summit (EAS) countries, aims to revive the historical legacy of Nalanda as a center of learning and knowledge exchange.

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure

The new campus boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure designed to accommodate modern educational needs. It features two Academic Blocks equipped with 40 classrooms, offering a combined seating capacity of approximately 1900 students. Additionally, the campus includes two auditoriums, each capable of seating 300 individuals, facilitating academic and cultural events. A dedicated student hostel provides accommodation for around 550 students, ensuring a conducive environment for learning and holistic development.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Design

Highlighting its commitment to sustainability, the Nalanda University campus is designated as a ‘Net Zero’ Green Campus. It incorporates innovative eco-friendly features such as a solar power plant for energy generation, domestic and drinking water treatment plants, and a water recycling facility for wastewater reuse. Spread across 100 acres, the campus includes natural water bodies, enhancing its ecological footprint and promoting environmental stewardship.

Historical Significance

Nalanda University holds profound historical significance, dating back to its establishment around 1600 years ago. Recognized as one of the world’s earliest residential universities, it served as a hub for intellectual discourse and Buddhist teachings. In 2016, the archaeological remains of the original Nalanda site were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, underscoring its cultural and educational legacy.

Inauguration Ceremony

During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the university’s role in fostering academic collaboration and cultural exchange among EAS member countries. Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, Bihar Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar, and other dignitaries graced the occasion, reaffirming their commitment to promoting educational excellence and international cooperation.
