Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai showcased a landmark moment in infrastructure development as he launched and laid the foundation stones for multiple transformative projects collectively valued at over Rs 29,400 crores. These initiatives, spanning crucial sectors such as roads, railways, and ports, aim to bolster connectivity, ease congestion, and propel economic growth across Maharashtra.
Addressing a gathering of officials and stakeholders, PM Modi underscored the strategic significance of these projects in enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure. The highlight of the announcements was the commencement of the Thane Borivali Tunnel Project, a monumental effort costing Rs. 16,600 crores. This twin tube tunnel, spanning 11.8 kilometers beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, will establish a vital link between Western Express Highway at Borivali and Thane Ghodbander Road. Anticipated to slash travel time between Thane and Borivali by up to 1 hour, the project promises to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance commuter convenience significantly.
In parallel, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, with an investment exceeding Rs. 6300 crore. Stretching over 6.65 kilometers, the GMLR aims to connect Western Express Highway at Goregaon to Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, thus improving intra-city connectivity and supporting economic activities. This strategic initiative is expected to streamline traffic flow and enhance access to key economic hubs.
Further reinforcing the infrastructure overhaul, PM Modi inaugurated the Kalyan Yard Remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan Yard remodelling project focuses on optimizing rail operations by segregating long-distance and suburban train traffic, thereby boosting operational efficiency and reducing congestion. Simultaneously, the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal, covering an expansive area of 32,600 square meters, is poised to emerge as a crucial logistics hub, facilitating the handling of diverse commodities and generating employment opportunities for local residents.
Recognizing the importance of robust railway infrastructure, PM Modi dedicated upgraded facilities at pivotal stations including Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. These enhancements include new platforms and extended facilities designed to accommodate longer trains, thereby improving passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
Additionally, PM Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, a visionary initiative with an allocation of approximately Rs. 5600 crore. This transformative program aims to empower youth through skill enhancement and industry exposure via structured internships, preparing them for diverse career opportunities and contributing to reducing unemployment.
PM Modi’s comprehensive agenda during his Mumbai visit underscores the government’s steadfast commitment to infrastructure development, economic prosperity, and youth empowerment. These transformative initiatives are expected to accelerate Maharashtra’s growth trajectory, fostering inclusive development and positioning the state as a leader in infrastructure excellence on the national and global stage.
