Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated and addressed the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference at ICAR PUSA, paying tribute to the legendary agricultural scientist who revolutionised Indian farming.

Describing Dr. M.S. Swaminathan as a visionary who ensured India’s food security, the Prime Minister said his work transformed “science into service” and uplifted millions of farmers. “Dr. Swaminathan’s pioneering ideas such as the Evergreen Revolution and bio-villages continue to inspire our efforts toward sustainable agriculture,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s progress in agricultural innovation, emphasising the need to integrate traditional knowledge with modern technology to achieve long-term food and nutritional security. He said the government remains fully committed to empowering farmers through policies that strengthen productivity, income, and resilience to climate challenges.

During the event, PM Modi launched the M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food & Peace, an international recognition aimed at honouring contributions toward global food security and sustainable agriculture. The award commemorates Dr. Swaminathan’s lifelong dedication to ending hunger and promoting harmony through equitable food systems.

The centenary conference, organised by ICAR and leading agricultural institutions, brings together scientists, policymakers, and innovators from around the world to discuss future pathways for sustainable farming and rural development.
