In a landmark move aimed at promoting gender equality and political inclusion, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in Leh has passed a resolution granting 33% reservation for women in its upcoming council elections.
The decision was taken during the General Council meeting and has been widely hailed across the region. Saira Bano, Executive Member of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Ladakh, praised the development as a transformative step for women’s participation in governance.
“This is a historic moment. In our council, a resolution was passed regarding women’s reservation. I thank the Executive Councillor and all the councillors who supported this resolution,” Bano said. She also extended gratitude on behalf of the Muslim community in Ladakh, adding, “When we have the power to make decisions, we can do many things. We can be part of development works and work towards women empowerment.”
The move is expected to not only increase women’s representation in local governance but also strengthen ongoing efforts for inclusive development in the union territory.
