Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured BJP candidate Amrita Roy from West Bengal’s Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency that he is committed to returning nearly ₹3,000 crore to the poor people of West Bengal. This amount, according to the Prime Minister, was “looted” from them and is currently attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
During a telephonic conversation on Wednesday, the Prime Minister expressed his concern over the plight of the poor in West Bengal who have been victims of financial irregularities. He assured Roy that his government is working diligently to ensure that the attached funds are returned to the rightful owners.
The Prime Minister’s assurance comes at a time when the BJP is making significant inroads into West Bengal, a state traditionally dominated by the Trinamool Congress. The conversation with Roy is seen as part of the BJP’s larger strategy to consolidate its position in the state.
The assurance of returning the “looted” money could turn out to be a significant move in winning the trust of the people in West Bengal. However, it remains to be seen how this promise will be implemented and what impact it will have on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Enforcement Directorate, an economic intelligence agency responsible for enforcing economic laws and fighting economic crime in India, has yet to comment on the Prime Minister’s statement.
