Indian Railways Reaffirms Compliance With National Food Standards; Clarifies No Mandate on Halal-Certified Meat in Onboard Meals

Indian Railways has issued a clear and authoritative clarification regarding recent media reports and social media discussions concerning the use of Halal-processed meat in non-vegetarian meals served onboard trains.

The matter gained renewed attention following reports that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had issued a notice to the Railways over a complaint alleging exclusive use of Halal-certified meat in catering services. Addressing these claims, Indian Railways has categorically stated that no guidelines or directives exist requiring catering units to serve Halal-certified meat.

The Railways highlighted that a similar query had surfaced in July 2023 through social media, to which IRCTC had already responded unequivocally. At that time, IRCTC clarified that it serves non-vegetarian meals—primarily chicken—that fully conform to the standards specified under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with all subsequent amendments.

Reiterating its firm commitment to quality and statutory compliance, Indian Railways emphasized the following:

  • There is no mandate to source or serve Halal-certified meat in onboard meals.
  • All catering licensees and vendors are required to strictly follow the food safety norms prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • IRCTC ensures 100% adherence to FSSAI guidelines across all catering operations and complies with every instruction issued by the Ministry of Railways on food preparation and service.

Indian Railways underscored that its catering framework is governed solely by national food safety regulations and not by any religious certification requirements. The organisation reiterated its unwavering commitment to delivering safe, hygienic, and high-quality meals to passengers across the country.

By maintaining strict compliance with Government of India standards, Indian Railways continues to uphold its reputation as one of the nation’s most trusted public service institutions, ensuring that passenger welfare and food safety remain top priorities.
