PM Modi Highlights ‘Biohappiness’ at M.S. Swaminathan Centenary Conference

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, paying rich tribute to the legendary agricultural scientist and highlighting his transformative contributions to rural India.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi praised Dr. M.S. Swaminathan’s pioneering vision that led India’s Green Revolution and helped achieve food security. He emphasized Swaminathan’s unique concept of “biohappiness” — the idea of using biodiversity as a tool to empower communities, especially farmers, fishers, and tribal populations.

“Dr. Swaminathan believed that true happiness and prosperity come from valuing our biodiversity and using it to support local livelihoods,” Modi said. “His idea of biohappiness brought real change to the lives of millions by converting scientific research into practical solutions.”

The Prime Minister lauded Swaminathan’s efforts to connect agricultural science with social welfare. “Whether it was through improving crop varieties, supporting fisherfolk with sustainable practices, or empowering tribal communities through forest-based livelihoods, Dr. Swaminathan ensured science served the people,” he added.

PM Modi called upon today’s scientists and agricultural experts to build upon this legacy by promoting sustainable, inclusive, and tech-driven agriculture. He stressed that the future of Indian farming lies in blending traditional wisdom with modern innovation, ensuring both ecological balance and economic growth.

Highlighting the need for climate-resilient agriculture and natural farming, Modi reiterated the government’s support for initiatives that improve farmer incomes while preserving environmental resources.

The event saw participation from global agricultural scientists, policymakers, and development experts. It marked a centenary tribute to Dr. Swaminathan’s legacy — a life dedicated to fighting hunger and uplifting rural India through science.
