In a landmark decision aimed at promoting gender equality and empowerment, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, has passed a resolution granting 33% reservation for women in the upcoming council elections. The resolution was adopted during the General Council meeting, marking a significant step toward inclusive governance in the region.
Reacting to the development, Saira Bano, Executive Member of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Ladakh, called it a historic moment. “This is a historic moment. In our council, a resolution was passed regarding women’s reservation. I thank the Executive Councillor and all the councillors who supported this resolution,” she said.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of her community, Bano added, “I want to thank everyone on behalf of my Muslim community. When we have the power to make decisions, we can do many things. We can be part of development works and work towards women empowerment.”
The resolution is expected to pave the way for greater participation of women in the political process of Ladakh and further strengthen grassroots democracy. Local leaders and community members have welcomed the move as a progressive step toward equality and representation.
