In a poignant moment of acknowledgment and appreciation, the West Pakistan Refugees (WPR) Association conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for finally granting them citizenship, a right denied to them for over seven decades. The emotional meeting took place during a call on by the President of the WPR Association, Shri. Labha Ram Gandhi, to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh today in New Delhi.
The WPRs, who had migrated from West Pakistan during the partition in 1947 and settled primarily in Jammu, Kathua, and Rajouri districts of Jammu Division, expressed immense gratitude to the leadership of Prime Minister Modi for their unwavering support during times of hardship and displacement. “We are deeply touched by the kindness and generosity shown towards us, ensuring our well-being and integration into Indian society,” stated the association.
Highlighting the injustices endured over decades, the association lamented previous governments’ neglect of their issues, which left them deprived of citizenship and voting rights. The recent abrogation of Article 370 was hailed as a historic move that brought justice to their community, enabling them to fully integrate and participate in India’s democratic processes.
Speaking to Dr. Jitendra Singh, who represents the Udhampur Lok Sabha Constituency, the refugees shared plans for a grand celebration on August 5th, marking five years since the abrogation of Article 370. This event symbolizes a renewed beginning for them, finally securing their long-denied rights.
During the meeting, the association also sought expedited compensation and redressal of remaining grievances. Dr. Singh assured them of swift action and time-bound resolution, reaffirming the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns comprehensively.
In a concluding statement, the refugees pledged to contribute positively to their adopted homeland’s progress and prosperity. “Thank you, Government of India, for embracing us with open arms and granting us a chance to begin anew,” they expressed gratefully.
The meeting underscored a significant milestone in the journey of the West Pakistani refugees, marking a chapter of justice, inclusivity, and hope for a brighter future in India.
